Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I CONTACT ANIMAL CONTROL AND WHAT ARE THE SHELTER HOURS?

Guadalupe County Animal Control is located at 3021 N. Guadalupe St in Seguin, TX.  It is on the same property as the Sheriff’s Office and County Jail, just at the far north end.  We have officers on duty Monday thru Friday from 7am- 5pm and then on Saturday from 8am-12pm.  If you need to contact Animal Control you must go through the Sheriff’s office by calling 830-379-1224 and ask for Animal Control.  If we are not in the office, you can leave a message with dispatch, or they can reach us via the radio as needed.

IF I SEE AN ANIMAL AT LARGE HOW TO I REPORT IT TO ANIMAL CONTROL?

If you see a dog running at large DO NOT STOP AND PICK IT UP AND BRING IT TO THE SHELTER!!  Contact animal control and provide an accurate location for the dog and we will go out and pick it up if necessary.  If you witness some type of livestock, such as cattle, horses, sheep or goats at large contact Animal Control with a location and we will send an officer to deal with the livestock.

IF I WITNESS WHAT I BELIEVE IS ANIMAL CRUELTY HOW DO I REPORT IT?

If you witness something you believe could be animal cruelty, please contact Animal Control and provide as much information as possible so that we can then investigate.  Specific location is helpful but at least enough info so that we can find what you are describing.  Description of the animal you are concerned with and what type of cruelty you are possibly witnessing is necessary as well.

DOES ANIMAL CONTROL PICK UP CATS?

Guadalupe County does not have any ordinances which require cats to remain on their property.  It is not against the law for them run at large so we CANNOT impound cats.  We also do not take cats into the Shelter.

IF I HAVE WILDLIFE IN MY YARD, SHOULD I REPORT IT TO ANIMAL CONTROL?

Guadalupe County Animal Control will come and remove wildlife if it becomes a nuisance or a potential health risk.  We will NOT come and remove wildlife just for being present on your property.  It will be at our discretion to determine if the animal needs to be removed or simply left alone to do whatever it chooses.  You are also free to contact a Texas Game Warden for more assistance or information.  ANIMAL CONTROL DOES NOT HANDLE FERAL PIGS.

MY NEIGHBOR’S DOG BARKS CONTINUOSLY.  WILL ANIMAL CONTROL DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?

Guadalupe County does not have any noise ordinances that includes barking dogs.  Without any ordinances there is no legal recourse for Animal Control to deal with barking dogs.

MY NEIGHBOR’S CHICKENS KEEP COMING INTO MY YARD?  WHAT CAN I DO?

Guadalupe County does not have any ordinances which require fowl (chickens, geese, ducks, guinea etc.) to remain on their property.  This means it is not against the law for them to roam at large.

DOES ANIMAL CONTROL PICK UP OR REMOVE DECEASED ANIMALS?

If you witness a deceased animal on the roadway, you can report it to the Sheriff’s office, and they can notify the appropriate agency responsible for maintaining the road it is on and hopefully get it removed.  Animal Control does not normally remove deceased animals on the roadway nor on private property.

HOW LONG DOES THE SHELTER HOLD DOGS AFTER THEY ARE IMPOUNDED?

Texas law requires us to hold the dogs for a minimum of 72 hours.  After that the dogs become the property of Guadalupe County and we are free to whatever is necessary with the dog.  Guadalupe County typically requires the dogs be held for a minimum of five days before we will do anything with the dog.  Certain circumstances can cause these times to be adjusted.  After five days, the dogs become available for adoption and can leave the Shelter.  Depending on the dog and how much space is available in could also be euthanized.  We do not typically euthanize dogs unless we run out of room and have no choice.  Euthanization is always done at the discretion of the Animal Control Officers

CAN I SURRENDER MY DOG TO THE SHELTER?

The Shelter does sometimes accept surrendered dogs.  We are very limited on space so we will only accept them by appointment and there is a fee to surrender.  If you need to surrender, please call the office and speak with an officer and if available we can set up an appointment for you.  DO NOT JUST BRING THE DOG IN, AS WE WILL NOT ACCEPT IT WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO ADOPT FROM THE SHELTER?

Texas law requires that any dog adopted from a shelter be altered and vaccinated for rabies.  If you would like to adopt a dog you will need to provide us with proof that you have made arrangements for these things to happen before we can allow the dog to leave the Shelter.  Once the dog has been altered and vaccinated you will need to provide further verification that it was done.  Guadalupe County does not currently charge a fee to adopt.  Any money spent will go to your chosen veterinarian.

WHAT DO I DO IF I AM BITTEN BY AN ANIMAL?

Texas law requires that all animal bites be reported to the local rabies control authority, which in Guadalupe County is the Animal Control Department.  To be considered a bite, the skin must be broken.  Once reported we will investigate the incident and make sure the animal is tested for rabies if possible.  If the biting animal is an owned dog, the test will be done at the owner’s expense.  If it is a stray or wild animal, Animal Control will make every effort to capture the animal and get it tested.  There are two methods for testing and either can be utilized depending on the circumstances of the bite.  Testing methods can be interchanged at the investigating officer’s discretion and as each case determines.  Once the testing is complete the results will be provided to the victim of the bite.
